Job summary

Affirm is building its own bank and seeks a Staff Software Engineer to anchor a small AI-native team responsible for vendor-integrated banking infrastructure, data platforms, and operational tooling. You will set technical direction, own high-stakes systems, and drive architecture and standards across the surface area.

You will work with senior leadership to ensure regulatory alignment, reliability, and scalable AI-enabled engineering, while mentoring engineers and shaping the bank’s technical

Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with staff-level credentials and a track record of owning ambiguous, high-stakes systems end-to-end.
• Fluent with AI-assisted development tools and able to leverage AI as a developer multiplier.
• Experience with public cloud infrastructure, IaC, and data platforms; able to navigate regulated environments.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction across the bank's systems, including cloud, data platform, and core banking configuration.
• Own the hardest problems end-to-end, designing, building, integrating, and operating critical stack components.
• Lead code and design review, and establish patterns and standards for a small but high-performing team.
• Ship AI-first capabilities and leverage agentic workflows to improve development and operations.
• Lead vendor evaluation, integration, and ongoing oversight of third-party platforms.
• Define the integration boundary with affirm inc and ensure regulatory separation is maintained.
• Collaborate with legal, compliance, risk, and audit to bake compliance into the product from day one.
• Own operational posture: reliability, observability, runbooks, incident response, and disaster recovery.
• Communicate technical strategy and tradeoffs to executives, board, and non-engineering stakeholders.
• Mentor peers, contribute to hiring, and elevate engineering bar.
