Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Lead Protection & Control Engineer to design high-voltage substations, mentor junior engineers, and drive technical excellence from concept through construction.

The role involves coordinating with clients and cross-functional teams, developing relay protection schemes, and ensuring QA/QC compliance while delivering safe, reliable, and code-compliant engineering solutions for the electric grid.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited Electrical Engineering degree required.
• 10+ years of experience in Substation protection & control design engineering.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent document management and organization skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and interact professionally with clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Design substation protection and control systems utilizing applicable codes and client standards (if available).
• Prepare one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, logic, and functional diagrams, panel layouts, wiring/connection, interconnection diagrams, communications systems, BOMs, and SCADA.
• Develop protective relaying and control system designs for transmission and distribution substations.
• Create relay protection schemes, relay settings criteria, control philosophies, and engineering calculations.
• Create equipment/material specifications for procurement and development of design scope/cost estimates.
• Complete conceptual protection and control designs and layouts for new/existing substations.
• Prepare support documentation for procurement, construction, commissioning, operation/maintenance.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors for project execution.
• Lead and participate in client meetings and site visits to collect data and present solutions.
• Lead and ensure QA/QC processes and technical reviews of design packages.
• Provide mentorship and oversight to junior engineers and designers.
