Job summary

GitHub, Inc. is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer for the Database Infrastructure team to ensure reliability and scalability of the database fleet powering GitHub.

You will design core components for both self-managed and cloud-managed infrastructure and work across distributed teams to support engineering across GitHub. You will lead efforts in replication, failover automation, capacity planning, and Azure migration, while operating in a remote-first, asynchronous environment.

Qualifications

• 6+ years experience in Software Engineering with production software delivery in major languages.
• Associate’s Degree in CS/EE and 5+ years of software engineering experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree in CS/EE and 4+ years of software engineering experience.
• Master’s Degree and 2+ years of software engineering experience.
• Doctorate in CS/EE or related fie and experience.
• Equivalent experience accepted.

Responsibilities

• Design and build core components of GitHub's database platform across on-prem and cloud infrastructure.
• Be a subject matter expert on database internals and administration within GitHub.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to align database needs with planning and reviews.
• Operate replication topology, failover automation, and backup/restore tooling.
• Tune kernels, storage, compute and disk to meet throughput and durability targets.
• Contribute to capacity planning and migration to new VM/disk generations.
• Participate in on-call rotation and incident response.
• Support evolution of our fleet onto Azure.
