GitHub is seeking a Staff Systems Engineer to join our Database Infrastructure team. You will design and operate the distributed database platform powering GitHub, across self-managed and cloud-managed environments.

We value deep expertise in database internals, cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or Google), and production-grade Go/Python/Rust tooling. This remote US role emphasizes on-call, capacity planning, and cross-team collaboration to ensure reliability and scale.

Qualifications

9+ years of software engineering experience with production systems.
Alternative: Associate’s Degree + 8+ years in software engineering.
Bachelor’s degree + 7+ years in software engineering.
Master’s degree + 5+ years in software engineering.
Doctorate + 3+ years in software engineering.
Equivalent experience accepted.

Responsibilities

Design and build core components of GitHub's database platform across self-managed and cloud-managed infrastructure.
Be a subject matter expert on database internals and administration at GitHub.
Collaborate with engineering teams to align database needs with planning and reviews.
Operate and improve replication, failover, and backup, including tooling for management.
Tune kernels, storage, and compute to meet throughput and latency targets.
Plan capacity and migrate to newer VM/disk generations as needed.
Participate in on-call rotations and respond to incidents.
Contribute to migrations toward Azure and other clouds.
