Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Staff Systems Engineer for the Database Infrastructure team to ensure reliability and scalability of the database fleet. You will design core components across self-managed and cloud-managed infra and act as SME on database internals.

You will collaborate with multiple engineering teams, manage replication and failover automation, and contribute to capacity planning and fleet migrations, all while operating in a remote-first environment across geographies.

Qualifications

• 9+ years of software engineering or related technical discipline with production code experience.
• Alternative path: Associate’s Degree with 8+ years of production coding experience.
• Alternative path: Bachelor’s Degree with 7+ years of production coding experience.
• Alternative path: Master’s Degree with 5+ years of production coding experience.
• Alternative path: Doctorate with 3+ years of production coding experience.
• Equivalent experience accepted.

Responsibilities

• Design and build core components of GitHub's database platform across self-managed and cloud-managed infrastructure.
• Be a subject matter expert on database internals and database administration within GitHub.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to understand how they use our databases and support them through design reviews.
• Operate and improve replication topology and failover automation including primaries, replica tiers, promotion, cross-region replication, and backup/restore tooling.
• Operate components our databases run, including kernel tuning, storage configuration, and compute/disk SKU selection to meet throughput, latency, and durability targets.
• Contribute to capacity planning for the database fleet, instance sizing, and migrating to new VM/disk generations.
• Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to incidents as needed.
• Contribute to migration of fleet to Azure.
