Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer for the Database Infrastructure team to ensure reliability and scalability of the database fleet powering GitHub. The role involves steering multi-year architectural strategy, owning replication and failover, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align database roadmap with product needs.

We expect extensive experience in software engineering and deep knowledge of MySQL internals, Azure or other clouds, and leading large-scale migrations

Qualifications

• 11+ years experience in Software Engineering or related field with production software coding in languages such as C/C++/C#/Java/Python
• Alternative career paths with related degrees and extensive experience considered
• Bachelor's degree with 9+ years experience or Master's with 7+ years experience considered
• Doctorate with 5+ years experience also acceptable

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for GitHub's database platform and drive multi-year architectural strategy
• Be a subject matter expert on database internals and administration within GitHub
• Partner with engineering teams to align database roadmap with product needs and guide design decisions
• Own replication topology and failover automation including cross-region replication and zonal failover
• Lead capacity planning and migrations to new VM/disk generations and optimize throughput and latency
