Job summary

Pearson is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own end-to-end backend and platform initiatives, designing, building, and operating scalable systems on AWS. You will lead architecture discussions, drive modernization, reliability, and performance across distributed services.

You will collaborate with product, security, and operations teams across global sites, mentor engineers, and produce clear technical documentation.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field; Master’s is a plus.
7+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, building, and operating backend systems.
Demonstrated experience as a technical lead or senior engineer for complex, cross-functional initiatives.
Deep knowledge of backend concepts: distributed systems, concurrency, scalability, fault tolerance, resiliency, and performance.
Strong programming experience with Java, Kotlin, Scala, C#, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.
Experience designing microservices, RESTful APIs, event-driven architectures, streaming systems, and integration services.
Strong AWS and cloud-native engineering experience across multiple services.
Experience with automated testing, CI/CD, and observability.
Experience diagnosing production issues and improving system reliability across distributed apps.
Ability to create architecture diagrams, runbooks, and engineering best-practice guidance.

Responsibilities

Lead architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support of complex software systems.
Build scalable, reliable backend services, distributed systems, event-driven apps, and stream-processing solutions.
Own major engineering initiatives from discovery through delivery and production support.
Balance new feature delivery with modernization, debt reduction, and reliability improvements.
Collaborate with product, security, operations, and other teams to translate requirements into technical approaches.
Develop and communicate technical proposals, decisions, risks, and trade-offs.
Lead technical discovery sessions, architecture reviews, and system design discussions.
Design APIs, microservices, asynchronous workflows, event-driven systems, and cloud-native services.
Evaluate existing capabilities and avoid unnecessary duplication; align with enterprise architecture.
Create PoCs and evolve prototypes into production-ready capabilities.
Provide technical leadership across onshore/offshore teams and ensure high-quality delivery.
Mentor engineers, perform code reviews, and promote best practices.
Establish standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and operation readiness.
Produce clear documentation including designs, runbooks, and engineering guidelines.
Drive continuous improvement across development, deployment, and production support.
Own production systems, including monitoring, incident response, and root-cause analysis.
Operate in a 24/7 production environment and uphold production responsibility.
Stay current with cloud, distributed systems, AI, and engineering productivity advancements.
Evaluate AI-assisted capabilities for value, and promote AI-native engineering culture.
Contribute to an AI-native culture by applying AI across discovery to operation.
