Job summary

Nisa Helpline is seeking a Relief Peer Counsellor to provide confidential peer counselling to callers on our anonymous helpline. The role supports callers in building action plans and connecting with resources, on an independent contractor basis with shifts including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.

Responsibilities include empathetic listening, developing coping strategies, and coordinating referrals while maintaining strict confidentiality and professional conduct.

Qualifications

• Fluent in English and an additional language (Arabic, Urdu, French or Somali)
• Confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive information
• Dependable in providing updates and communicating changes
• Hotline experience is an asset

Responsibilities

• Respond to incoming helpline calls from Muslim women in a confidential, anonymous, and non-judgmental manner using a peer counselling model
• Provide empathetic and supportive listening to callers to build rapport and identify support needed
• Guide callers to devise an action plan to empower callers
• Develop recovery plans, coping methods, and rehabilitation strategies with the client
• Utilize helpline referral system to provide appropriate referrals to callers
• Adhere to helpline guidelines and policies in daily activities
• Maintain a calm, professional, respectful demeanor during every call
• Update call log at end of shift to ensure documentation is complete
• Communicate with helpline manager to report issues or seek guidance
• Ensure confidentiality of caller and sensitive information
• Participate in mandatory trainings and role plays
• Incorporate values of cultural competence and inclusiveness
• Be able to work independently
