Job summary

The Principal Fire Protection Engineer serves as the technical authority for fire and life safety across energy storage, power, and EPC projects, ensuring compliance with codes, standards and client specs from concept through commissioning.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of fire protection engineering experience with energy infrastructure experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering or closely related discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, or similar).
• P.E. license in Fire Protection Engineering is preferred.
• Proven experience working with AHJs, including fire marshals and code officials, to secure approvals and navigate permitting and inspections.
• Advanced understanding of fire protection engineering principles.
• Experience managing or reviewing work by external consultants or peer reviews on complex projects.
• Knowledge of applicable building codes (NFPA, IBC, UL 9540/9540A, UL855).
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently and in teams across time zones.
• Ability to travel up to 25%.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert guidance on fire safety challenges and risk mitigation.
• Establish company-wide engineering standards and best practices.
• Lead national fire protection code committees and contribute to energy storage codes.
• Act as primary technical interface with AHJs, fire marshals, insurers, and engineers; travel to meetings as needed.
• Develop basis-of-design documents for fire protection systems.
• Manage scopes of work, RFPs, and evaluation criteria for 3rd party EORs and vendors.
• Oversee design deliverables, schedules, and budgets for fire protection EORs.
• QA/QC 3rd party work products to ensure compliance with standards and requirements.
• Collaborate with electrical and SCADA teams for design consistency.
• Support design optimization for cost, performance, constructability.
• Provide technical support during testing and commissioning.
• Lead engagements with Owners and provide technical training.
