Job summary

ABB seeks a highly skilled Field Technician to lead installation, startup, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical distribution equipment in the NY metro area, with a remote work component for prep and on-site work at customer sites. Travel up to 70% is required and the role reports to the Field Service Manager.

The position requires 8+ years of experience in electrical power distribution, plus expertise with LV/MV switchgear, protective relays, ATS, PLCs, and related systems.

Qualifications

• 8+ years field service or engineering experience in electrical power distribution.
• Strong knowledge of LV/MV switchgear and circuit breakers.
• Experience with protective relays (SEL, GE Multilin, or equivalent).
• Ability to read electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams.
• Analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel up to 70%.
• Work authorization to work for ABB in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Execute startup, commissioning, maintenance, testing and repair on electrical distribution equipment.
• Perform field service on switchgear, circuit breakers, relays, ATS, PLCs, and power management systems.
• Diagnose equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
• Support retrofits, upgrades, and emergency service calls.
• Develop electrical drawings, schematics and BOMs as required.
• Deliver customer service and maintain relationships.
• Prepare service and commissioning reports and documentation.
