Job summary

The 61st Street Service Corporation, which provides administrative and clinical support for ColumbiaDoctors, is seeking a Customer Service Specialist I. This role is primarily remote and will handle patient and payer calls, focusing on collections and payment arrangements while maintaining accurate account information.

Candidates should have a high school diploma and experience in physician billing or payer environments; familiarity with Epic or other billing systems is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or GED required.
• Experience in physician billing or third party payer environment (minimum 6 months).
• Understanding of contracts, insurance benefits, exclusions and billing requirements (HMOs, PPOs, Medicare, Medicaid).
• Ability to navigate payer adjudication process.
• Experience with patient financial and practice management systems (Epic or similar).
• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Previous call center/claims experience preferred.
• Experience in an academic healthcare setting preferred.

Responsibilities

• Handle high volume of calls and work in a timely manner.
• Attempt to collect full payment from patient or guarantor professionally.
• Establish payment arrangements per guidelines; document terms in billing system.
• Apply payments to the date of service.
• Handle inquiries, disputes and complaints; escalate as needed.
• Obtain and update insurance, demographic and guarantor information; bill third party payers.
• Document summaries and follow-up steps after each call.
