Job summary

UnitedHealth Group seeks a SDS/Observations Medical Coder to join a full-time, remote-capable team. The role focuses on assigning CPT/ICD-10 codes for outpatient Ambulatory Observation services while adhering to official coding guidelines and client-specific rules.

The position requires AHIMA/AAPC credentials and 2+ years in outpatient facility coding, including Same Day Surgery and ICD-10 experience, with proficiency in Excel and EMR systems. Telecommuting is available across the U.S.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED required.
• Current coding credentials from AHIMA or AAPC (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC or CPC-H).
• 2+ years of outpatient facility coding experience.
• 2+ years of Same Day Surgery Coding.
• 2+ years of ICD-10 experience.
• Intermediate proficiency with Windows and MS Excel and EMR systems.

Responsibilities

• Identify CPT and ICD-10 code assignments for outpatient Ambulatory Observation services per guidelines.
• Apply coding knowledge to analyze/correct CCI Edits and Medical Necessity Edits.
• Understand Medicare Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) codes.
• Abstract additional data during chart review as needed.
• Maintain coding ethics per AAPC/AHIMA standards.
• Meet performance standards for coding quality and productivity.
• Provide documentation feedback to providers and query physicians when needed.
• Stay updated on coding knowledge via QM Manager and Directors.
• Attend coding department meetings and educational events.
• Review and maintain charts coded/missing.
