Job summary

UnitedHealth Group, operating through Optum, is seeking an Outpatient Medical Coder Edits to determine CPT and ICD-10 codes for same-day surgeries and complex cases. This full-time role supports remote work across the United States, with flexible 8-hour shifts.

You will apply coding policies, analyze edits and medical necessity, and provide provider feedback while staying current with coding guidelines and internal standards.

Qualifications

• Professional coder certification with credentialing from AHIMA and/or AAPC (CCA, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-H/COC, CIC, CCS-P, CPC, and CPC-A) to be maintained annually
• 2+ years of Outpatient Facility coding experience for all chart types, Same Day Surgery, Observation, Emergency Department, Ancillary services, and Clinics
• 1+ years of experience with LCD, NCD, Medical Necessity, Modifier Edits, OCE, MUE and NCCI classification and reimbursement structures
• Expert level proficiency in CPT and ICD-10-CM coding
• Ability to use a PC in a Windows environment, including MS Excel and EMR systems
• High School Diploma/GED is required

Responsibilities

• Identify appropriate CPT/ICD-10 Code assignments for outpatient surgery, observation, ER, CVIR, and other services per guidelines
• Apply coding knowledge to analyze/correct Edits and Medical Necessity accounts
• Understand APC codes and their application to claims
• Abstract additional data elements during chart review when coding
• Adhere to coding ethics per AAPC/AHIMA standards
• Maintain performance in coding quality and productivity per Optum360
• Provide documentation feedback to providers and query physicians when needed
• Stay updated with QM Manager, Coding Operations Managers, and Director guidance
• Participate in coding department meetings and educational events
• Review and maintain records of coded charts, held, or missing
• Assume additional responsibilities as directed by management
