Job summary

Comfrt is seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Specialist to join our People & Culture team. You will manage multi-state payroll processing bi-weekly for hourly, salaried, and exempt staff, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance across states.

You will set up state registrations, monitor nexus for remote employees, and handle year-end tax forms while maintaining SOPs and supporting audits. This fully remote role offers strong benefits and a fast-growing startup environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on payroll processing experience, preferably multi-state environments.
• Experience setting up state payroll tax accounts across jurisdictions.
• Strong knowledge of federal/state payroll tax laws, wage/hour regulations and compliance.
• Proficiency with payroll software (Gusto, ADP, Rippling or similar).

Responsibilities

• Process full-cycle, multi-state payroll bi-weekly for all employees (hourly, salaried, exempt/non-exempt).
• Review and reconcile timekeeping data prior to payroll runs.
• Administer payroll changes including new hires, terminations, compensation changes, bonuses, and deductions.
• Process off-cycle payroll runs as needed for corrections or special payments.
• Audit payroll data for discrepancies and resolve issues promptly.
• Coordinate with Directors to ensure payroll data integrity across systems.
• Set up and manage employer tax accounts and registrations in new states.
