OpenTrain is recruiting for a remote contractor Mechanical Design Engineer focused on CAD and manufacturing. You will contribute mechanical design expertise to AI training work by creating and interpreting engineering drawings, translating design requirements into manufacturable specifications, and improving technical documentation.

The role centers on precise engineering judgment, clear communication, and practical design-for-manufacture decisions.

Qualifications

Extensive professional experience in mechanical design from concept to manufacturing.
Expert proficiency across multiple CAD platforms.
Experience using FreeCAD to interpret/reference models.
Strong drafting standards, GD&T, tolerancing, and manufacturing documentation.
Knowledge of material selection and design-for-manufacture best practices.
Clear written and verbal communication; ability to explain engineering decisions.
Experience collaborating remotely and providing constructive feedback.

Responsibilities

Create and interpret professional engineering drawings for manufacturing.
Translate requirements into manufacturable CAD specifications.
Produce detailed 2D and 3D models using multiple CAD tools.
Apply GD&T, tolerancing, and drafting standards to deliverables.
Document processes and design intent clearly; review for clarity and manufacturability.
Collaborate remotely and iterate designs for real production environments.
