Job summary

Sonoran Desert Institute, a DEAC-accredited, employee-owned online college, seeks an experienced Instructional Designer to join the Curriculum Team. You will collaborate with subject matter experts, create course blueprints, and design engaging online courses with assessments and authentic tasks.

Design work will involve Canvas-based shells, multimedia, accessibility, and ongoing QA. Travel up to 10% and a master’s degree in Curriculum & Instructional Design or equivalent are required.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instructional Design or a related subject.
• If degree is in another subject, a certificate in instructional design or related field with at least 16 credit hours (720 clock hours) required.
• Minimum three years of professional instructional design experience.
• Minimum one year of instructional design experience at a higher education institution.
• Advanced knowledge of adult learning principles and distance instruction.
• Practical experience with learning management systems and course-authoring software.
• Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills, with the ability to independently complete projects on deadline.
• Some travel required (up to 10%).

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with subject matter experts to analyze learning needs and identify objectives/outcomes for courses.
• Create course blueprints, design documents, project plans, curriculum maps, and other documentation.
• Identify and secure digital textbooks and external media with proper citations.
• Apply instructional design principles and accessibility standards to student-centered content.
• Design and develop engaging online course materials, including assessments and activities.
• Develop course shells and modules in Canvas using tools such as native Canvas tools, CidiLabs, Design Plus, and Canva.
• Support Academic Quality Assurance and continuous improvement efforts.
• Troubleshoot faculty and student course access and functionality issues.
• Stay current with trends in instructional design and distance education.
• Draft and publish standard operating procedures with Curriculum Staff.
