Job summary

Pena4 Inc. is seeking a Remote Medical Coder (IP) to accurately assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for inpatient hospital services. The role supports reimbursement, quality reporting, and regulatory requirements while maintaining high productivity and accuracy.

Inpatient and Swing Bed experience is preferred, with AHIMA or AAPC certification. The position is a 1099 independent consultant, part-time (about 20 hours weekly) with per-case pay.

Qualifications

• Minimum five (5) years of HIM and inpatient facility coding experience.
• Associates degree required in Health Information Management or related field; Bachelor's preferred.
• CCS required; additional credentials preferred (RHIA, RHIT, CCS-P, CPC, CPMA, COC, CIC, CRC).

Responsibilities

• Review inpatient records to determine principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures.
• Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes for diagnoses and procedures.
• Ensure documentation supports MS-DRG assignment and SOI/ROM.
• Query providers when documentation is incomplete or unclear.
• Maintain coder productivity and accuracy benchmarks (2 charts/hour; 95% DRG accuracy).
• Collaborate with CDI, compliance, and billing teams to resolve issues.
