Job summary

SOLV Energy is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation to own the preliminary substation design lifecycle for utility-scale solar, BESS, and interconnection projects. This fully remote role will coordinate with engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, and scheduling to align design basis, risks, and technical assumptions.

Requirements include a 3+ year background in electrical substation engineering and a strong grasp of IEEE, NEC, and NESC standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is a nice-to-have, not a must.
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in electrical design software (AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar).
• Strong understanding of IEEE, NEC, NESC and related utility interconnection requirements.
• Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to electrical engineering and solar development.
• Effective communication and leadership skills; ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach for assigned pursuits and projects, defining design basis and quantities for 10% design.
• Review client documents and interconnection agreements to identify requirements and risks.
• Serve as primary substation design SME and coordinate inputs from multiple teams.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design including single-line diagrams and general arrangement drawings.
• Ensure design, scope, schedule, and commercial assumptions are aligned with estimating and BD.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps or exclusions.
• Deliver owner-reviewed preliminary design to estimating and BD.
• Participate in client meetings to review exhibits and clarify requirements.
• Support contractual exhibit reviews and escalate significant risks.
• Transfer design decisions and open items clearly to stakeholders.
