Code for America is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a team of engineers responsible for building and operating systems that improve public services. This player-coach role combines hands-on contribution with people leadership, guiding delivery across multiple projects while maintaining high standards for quality and reliability.

You will collaborate with product, design, research, and program leads to align priorities, drive architecture decisions, and scale features.

Qualifications

• 7+ years as software engineer or engineering manager
• Experience leading engineering teams
• Strong communication and collaboration with cross-functional partners
• Demonstrated ability to deliver reliable systems with testing and observability
• Experience with AI tools and responsible adoption of AI in development
• Familiarity with cloud infra and IaC tooling

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and grow the engineers on your team through regular check-ins and feedback.
• Oversee technical delivery across projects, identify risks, and drive durable outcomes.
• Mentor staff in best practices and architectural judgment; model high quality standards.
• Help engineers own meaningful work with clear expectations and accountability.
• Address conflicts directly and mediate disagreements when needed.
• Recruit and retain engineering talent aligned with Code for America’s mission.
