Job summary

Code for America is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to shape the technical direction of an engineering team delivering high‑impact government services. You will lead delivery, architecture decisions, and collaborate across product and engineering teams from a remote US base.

The role emphasizes mentoring, setting technical direction, and responsible use of AI in development, with travel up to 10%. Eligible for full‑time remote employment within the United States.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with strong system architecture and data modeling.
• Experience across multiple languages, frameworks, and tech stacks, or ability to ramp quickly.
• Experience using AI coding tools judiciously and responsibly in production.
• Experience with Agile Software Development models (Scrum, XP, TDD, or BDD).
• Demonstrated technical leadership guiding decisions in ambiguous contexts.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and IaC tooling.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English.

Responsibilities

• Own architecture and data‑modeling decisions for significant parts of a production system.
• Own delivery of features with a focus on reliability and maintainability; write tests and monitor quality.
• Guide design, implementation, and code reviews; make technical trade‑offs with the team.
• Mentor engineers and enable growth through pairing, documentation, and coaching.
• Collaborate with product managers and cross‑functional peers to adapt to changing priorities.
