Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Substation Physical Design Engineer III to lead high‑voltage substation design, mentor junior engineers, and ensure quality and reliability across complex utility projects.

Remote candidates are welcome from across the United States with a preference for hybrid work near listed offices. You will collaborate with clients and cross‑functional teams from concept through construction, requiring strong communication and problem‑solving skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 4–7 years of experience in Substation physical design engineering.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations using applicable codes and client standards.
• Create general arrangement, equipment/electrical layouts, elevations, cable trenches, grounding, and BOMs.
• Develop ground grids and lightning protection and grounding plans.
• Perform load, bus span, and ampacity calculations.
• Prepare equipment and material specifications for procurement and cost estimates.
• Coordinate with clients, vendors, and internal teams to ensure project success.
• Provide mentorship and review calculations, drawings, and specs for junior staff.
