Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) seeks a talented Data Platform Engineer to lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization in a remote capacity for the Veterans Affairs (VA) department.

The role focuses on migrating from MSSQL XML object stores to a scalable AWS data architecture, enabling SQL-based reporting for business stakeholders and analysts. 8+ years in data or software engineering with strong AWS experience is required.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Experience architecting cloud data platform migrations in production healthcare environments.
• Strong SQL skills to design relational query layers over XML/JSON data.
• Hands-on AWS data services: S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch.
• Ability to translate business reporting requirements into data models and durable query patterns.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices and AWS-native tooling (CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy).
• Familiarity with IaC: AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.

Responsibilities

• Lead modernization of the healthcare data platform.
• Design and implement AWS data architecture for scalable reports.
• Migrate XML object store data from MSSQL to AWS platform with optimal storage formats.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata for discoverability.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models and queries.
• Work with back-end engineers to ensure smooth data flows from EDI pipelines to the new data layer.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure using AWS-native tools.
• Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries for technical and non-technical audiences.
