Job summary

Volunteers of America is seeking a Crisis Counselor to provide remote, telephone-based crisis intervention and suicide prevention services. Responsibilities include safety assessments, validation and supportive counseling, and appropriate referrals.

Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in a related field and experience in healthcare or mental health services. Strong typing, active listening, and motivational interviewing are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required in psychology, social work, or related field.
• At least 1 year of healthcare contact center experience.
• Experience in suicide prevention, crisis intervention, or mental health information/referral services preferred.
• Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration within 30 days.
• Typing speed 35 WPM or higher.
• Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to multitask and document in EMR.

Responsibilities

• Provide crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and brief supportive counseling via telephone.
• Conduct safety assessments following Lifeline Best Practices.
• Manage client interactions to ensure effective support.
• Adhere to HIPAA confidentiality and mandated reporting.
• Consult with peers and supervisors on duty, including mandatory reporting and imminent risk.
• Document all client interactions accurately and efficiently.
• Use Microsoft Teams to collaborate with peers and supervisors.
• Participate in staff meetings and training sessions to enhance clinical skills.
• Provide back-up support to other programs as required.
