Job summary

UKI is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer who writes code, reasons about distributed systems, and helps customers run cloud-native architectures in real-world settings. You will embed with customer teams, ship software, and operate Kubernetes in production across cloud and on-prem environments.

The role emphasizes hands-on debugging, IaC automation, and close collaboration with DoD/government-security aligned environments. Strong communication and pragmatic engineering are essential for success.

Qualifications

• 5+ years professional experience as a software engineer (backend or platform-focused).
• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language (TypeScript, Java, Go, Python).
• Hands-on experience deploying and operating Kubernetes workloads in production environments.
• Practical experience with GitOps tooling (ArgoCD preferred; Flux acceptable).
• Experience building and maintaining infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, Helm, and/or Kustomize.
• Ability to troubleshoot distributed systems, including container runtime issues, API failures, microservices communication, and misconfigured networking/CNI behavior.
• Familiarity with CNI plugins such as Calico, Cilium, or Multus.
• Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (DNS, TCP/IP, firewalls, proxies, service networking).
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
• Ability to write automation and tooling in scripting languages (Bash, Shell, Python).

Responsibilities

• Ship code, build tooling, and write automation for cloud-native environments.
• Debug distributed-systems failures and help customers adopt best practices in GitOps, networking, and IaC.
• Embed with customer teams, gather requirements, and translate constraints into feasible implementations.
• Work across cloud and on-prem environments and support production Kubernetes workloads.
• Communicate clearly with customers, including non-technical stakeholders, and balance ideal engineering with practical customer needs.
