Job summary

PLOS is seeking an Associate Director of Publishing to lead the journal portfolio and ensure alignment with our mission. You will supervise a team of Publishers, translate strategy into priorities, and drive portfolio performance across journals.

You will leverage publishing data, financial information, and community insights to guide decisions, partnering with Editorial, Sales, Marketing, and Product teams to shape sustainable growth for a global open-access portfolio.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Experience launching Open Access journals from proposal to publication.
• Strong commercial and financial skills, including budgeting, forecasting, business planning and P&L ownership.
• Substantial experience in STM publishing with progressively increased responsibility.
• Experience managing senior publishing professionals, or comparable portfolio leaders.
• Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans that deliver measurable business and operational outcomes.
• Strong track record of leading and developing high-performing, geographically distributed teams.
• Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills across cultures, disciplines, and organizational functions.
• Dedication to open access and transforming scholarly communication, with a genuine interest in engaging productively with the scientific community.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a portfolio-wide publishing strategy aligned with mission and objectives.
• Lead portfolio reviews and recommendations on journal positioning, growth opportunities, and performance.
• Balance needs of individual journals with broader portfolio and organizational goals.
• Support Publishers in responding to changes in research communities and publishing markets.
• Develop consistent decision frameworks for evaluating proposals and performance.
• Guide development of new journals, products, and publishing models in line with strategic direction.
