Job summary

PLOS is seeking an Associate Director, Publishing to provide strategic leadership for the journal portfolio. You will align portfolio priorities with organizational goals and oversee a team of Publishers to drive performance and growth.

You will use publishing data, market insights, and stakeholder engagement to shape journal strategy, manage risks, and ensure a sustainable, differentiated value proposition across PLOS journals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Substantial experience launching Open Access journals.
• Strong commercial and financial skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and P&L ownership.
• Substantial experience in STM publishing with progressively increased responsibility.
• Experience managing senior publishing professionals, or comparable portfolio leaders.
• Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans that deliver measurable business and operational outcomes.
• Strong track record of leading and developing high-performing, geographically distributed teams.
• Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills across cultures, disciplines, and organizational functions.
• Dedication to open access and transforming scholarly communication, with a genuine interest in engaging productively with the scientific community.

Responsibilities

• Lead portfolio strategy and performance aligned with PLOS's mission and objectives.
• Develop and manage budget forecasts and resource allocation in partnership with leadership.
• Partner with Editorial, Sales and Global Publishing Development to build impactful relationships with Editors-in-Chief and researchers.
• Drive cross-functional collaboration across Editorial, Publishing Operations, Marketing, Product and Finance.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
