Job summary

The Hartford is hiring a Staff Attorney to support its Complex Litigation Team from a remote home office. The role focuses on high-exposure matters across product liability, premises and general liability, auto and construction injuries.

You will analyze complex issues, conduct extensive legal research, draft pleadings and motions, coordinate with experts, and assist with trial preparation while communicating with Claims Professionals and clients in a technology-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience handling tort defense matters.
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
• Domicile in California, active license to practice in California, and ability to appear in applicable local state and federal courts.
• Member in good standing of California State Bar.
• Strong legal research and writing skills (writing sample required).
• Extensive experience writing substantive legal motions, including but not limited to motions for summary judgement and/or adjudication, demurrers and motions to strike.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and time are a must.
• Strong communication, computer and technology skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software are required.
• Demonstrated expertise and familiarity in the handling of claim cases and litigation.

Responsibilities

• Analyze intricate substantive and procedural legal and factual issues.
• Conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research.
• Draft pleadings, dispositive motions (e.g., motions for summary judgement, demurrers, motions to strike, etc.), discovery motions, discovery, and discovery responses.
• Compile exhibits and review documents; prepare memoranda that analyze evidence and recommend next steps; find and coordinate with experts; conduct legal research and analysis; prepare trial documents, among other tasks.
• Assist with trial preparation / possibly attend trial and participate in trial tasks.
• Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to the senior attorneys on the complex litigation team, clients, and claims customers on legal and factual issues in a technology driven environment.
• Communicate with court, witnesses, experts, opposing counsel, and co-counsel in a manner consistent with established office procedures.
• May take depositions, appear in court, attend client and expert meetings and assist with mediation, arbitration and trial and may communicate with clients.
• Apply strong legal research and writing skills, attention to detail, organization, strategic thinking, and collaboration to support complex litigation matters and deliver high‑quality work across all aspects of your responsibilities.
