Job summary

UP Health System - Marquette recruiting for a Registered Nurse (RN) in Observation Unit. Full‑time 0.75 FTE, 60 hours per pay period, 5 x 12‑hour night shifts with rotating weekends and holidays, plus a $7,500 sign‑on bonus for qualified applicants.

The role focuses on monitoring patients 24–48 hours to determine discharge or admission, documenting care, and collaborating with physicians to ensure high-quality care and safety.

Qualifications

• Current Michigan RN license.
• An associate's degree from an accredited nursing school (bachelor's preferred).
• BLS-HCP certification required; ACLS preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs plan of care interventions including medication administration and clinical treatments.
• Documents patient care.
• Works with providers to determine observation criteria and discharge/admission decisions.
• Monitors and communicates patient condition to the care team, patient, and family.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living.
• Coordinates patient transfer, discharge, and referrals as needed.
• Provides patient/family education tailored to age, culture, and condition.
• Advocates for the patient's physical and emotional well-being.

In our Observation Unit, you'll play a key role in monitoring patients, supporting timely clinical decisions, and helping guide them safely to the next step in their care-whether that's admission or discharge. How You'll Contribute

• Performs plan of care intervention, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, as well as other medical care treatment.
• Documents patient care given.
• Work closely with providers to ensure patients meet observation criteria. Monitor patients for a period of 24-48 hours to assess their condition and determine if they need to be admitted as an inpatient or discharged.
• Monitors, records, and communicate patient condition as appropriate to care team, physician, patient, and family.
• Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
• Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
• Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
• Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.

What We're Looking For

Applicants should have a current Michigan RN license and possess an associate's degree from an accredited nursing school (bachelor's preferred).

Additional Requirements Include

• Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) (preferred)
