Job summary

Fairview Health Services in Minnesota is seeking an RN ICU Float to join the Critical Care Services - ICU team. This part-time (.6) role covers both day and night shifts and requires delivering high-quality patient care across the ICU.

The ideal candidate will perform admission assessments, develop care plans, monitor patients, document accurately, and collaborate closely with the healthcare team to ensure safety and positive outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Current Minnesota RN license. BSN preferred.
  • Equivalent of one year Critical Care experience or two years Medical‑Surgical experience within past five years.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required and must be maintained.
  • PALS or certification within six months of employment.
  • TNCC or CALS certification or within 12 months of orientation.
  • ECG recognition/interpretation within six months of employment.
  • One year of relevant Medical/Surgical or 6 months Critical Care experience if not meeting all criteria.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality care to all patients and ensure safety throughout the continuum of care.
  • Complete admission assessments according to unit policy.
  • Identify nursing diagnoses and determine appropriate interventions.
  • Assess adult, geriatric, adolescent and pediatric patients and develop care plans.
  • Maintain accurate, objective patient records.
  • Ensure accuracy of orders and coordinate care.
  • Organize workload and remain flexible to changes.
  • Use department equipment correctly for procedures.
  • Perform nursing skills including IV, ECG, hemodynamic monitoring, airway management, pain management, and sedation assessment.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families and healthcare team to ensure coordinated care.
  • Manage multiple priorities with critical thinking and delegation as needed.
  • Ensure care plans align with standards and hospital policy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

We care for patients with a variety of diagnoses, including but not limited to: Acute Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Post‑Trauma, Shock, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Acute Croup, and Surgical Patients.

Job Duties
  • Provide quality care to all patients and ensure patient safety throughout the continuum of care, advocating for the patient and respecting advanced directives and patient decisions.
  • Complete admission assessments according to unit policy, utilizing past medical history, therapeutic communication, and physical assessment. Apply critical thinking and analysis.
  • Identify accurate nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems to determine appropriate interventions within accepted standards of care.
  • Assess the individual needs of adult, geriatric, adolescent and pediatric patients and develop appropriate care plans.
  • Maintain accurate, objective patient records.
  • Ensure the efficiency and accuracy of orders.
  • Assume patient care responsibilities by organizing workload effectively and remaining flexible to environmental changes.
  • Use departmental equipment correctly and efficiently; demonstrate knowledge of special preparations or equipment needed for department‑specific procedures.
  • Employ nursing skills/competencies, including IV access, ECG interpretation, hemodynamic monitoring, airway management, pain management, neurological assessment, fluid management, infection control, respiratory management and sedation/analgesia assessment and monitoring.
  • Communicate professionally and collaborate effectively with patients, families, co‑workers, healthcare team members and ancillary departments to ensure patient‑centered coordination of care.
  • Manage large volumes of patient, family, staff and physician priorities within short time frames, using critical thinking, delegation skills and respectful communication.
  • Ensure the plan of care is consistent with nursing standards and hospital policy and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required. This list is not all-inclusive and any other task may be assigned in the future.
Required Qualifications
  • Registered with the Minnesota Board of Nursing. BSN preferred.
  • Equivalent of one (1) year Critical Care experience or two (2) years Medical‑Surgical experience within the past five years.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required and must be maintained.
  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or attain certification within six months of employment and maintain certification.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) certification, or attain certification within 12 months of initial orientation in the emergency department and maintain certification.
  • ECG recognition/interpretation within six months of employment.
  • If no candidates meet the above requirements, consideration will be given to those with one (1) year relevant Medical/Surgical experience or 6 months of relevant Critical Care experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • American Association of Critical‑Care Nurses (AACN) CCRN certification preferred.
