Job summary

CPKC is seeking a Conductor to join our railroad teams in the United States. You will be part of a train crew, assist in switching rail cars, and operate within the union agreement.

The role requires vigilance for safety, willingness to work unscheduled shifts, and outdoor work in all weather. Starting as a conductor offers pathways to Yard Foreperson, Locomotive Engineer, or management, with paid training and progression opportunities described in our program.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to perform physically demanding work, including walking up to 6 miles daily, climbing, lifting and pulling up to 80 pounds.
  • Willingness to work unscheduled shifts in a 24/7 environment.
  • Working up to 12 hour shifts including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to report to work within a two hour call window after scheduled rest.
  • Excellent focus and attention to detail with multitasking ability.
  • Strong communication skills including radio directions.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions for long periods.
  • Must read/write English and be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED and valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Work in train or yard service depending on seniority.
  • Carry out instructions detailing a train's route and movements.
  • Coordinate switching of cars including coupling/uncoupling.
  • Observe and relay signals affecting train movement.
  • Signal crew via signals or radio for engine movement.
  • Follow GCOR, general orders and bulletins.
  • Provide flag protection and relay signals in emergencies.
  • Move on/off moving or stationary equipment.
  • Fill out forms and reports clearly and legibly.
  • Handle emergencies and operate fire extinguishers, apply first aid.
