Job summary

CPKC is seeking conductors to join its team in a safety-critical, union-backed role on a 24/7 schedule. You will perform train yard movements, switch operations, and safety tasks while working outdoors in all weather.

This foundational position offers growth toward yard foreperson or locomotive engineer roles. The role requires passing physical tasks, English safety instructions, and a valid driver's license, with long shifts and potential time away from home.

Qualifications

• Must be able to perform physically demanding work (walking up to 6 miles daily, climbing, lifting up to 80 pounds)
• Willingness to work unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 environment
• Ability to work 12 hour shifts including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays
• Ability to report to work within a two hour call window after rest
• Must understand safety rules and operating instructions in English
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Has a high school diploma or GED
• Must have a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

• Work in train or yard service depending on seniority
• Carry out instructions detailing a train's route and movements
• Coordinate switching of cars (coupling/uncoupling)
• Observe and relay signals affecting train movement
• Signal crew members for engine/trains movement via signals or radio
• Follow GCOR and general orders and bulletins
• Provide flag protection and relay signals in emergencies
• Move on and off moving or stationary equipment
• Fill out forms like train orders and switch lists
• Handle emergencies and operate fire extinguishers; perform first aid as needed
