Job summary

Norfolk Southern is recruiting for an Electrical Apprentice Signal Trainee in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on field training to prepare recruits for a career in railroad signal maintenance and safe operations.

Participants learn to install, inspect, and maintain critical signal systems, and may bid on seniority positions post-training. Extensive travel during training and union membership are part of the process.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical certificate or associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field preferred.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire; training provided by NS.
  • Must pass FRA drug/alcohol screening.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Perform FRA-required inspections and testing of signal systems and grade crossings.
  • Install, maintain, and repair signal equipment including signal lights, switch machines, and electrical switch locks.
  • Work with crossing warning devices and interlocking systems.
  • Support Positive Train Control (PTC) and cab signal systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams; operate tools and testing instruments.
  • Document inspections and repairs; work safely in outdoor environments; respond to on-call assignments.
