Qualifications

Job description

Our large pharmaceutical client is seeking a Protein Purification Scientist to join its Biologics Discovery group in Spring House, PA. This is a highly hands-on laboratory role focused on the purification, separation, characterization, and quality assessment of proteins and antibodies supporting biologics discovery.

The scientist will perform protein purification using liquid chromatography platforms and techniques including affinity chromatography, ion exchange chromatography (IEX), and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The role will also support high-throughput purification workflows and laboratory automation.

Approximately 80–90% of the position will involve hands-on laboratory work, with the remaining time focused on documentation, data review, experimental records, and related technical activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform hands-on purification and characterization of antibodies and other proteins.
• Execute protein purification using affinity, IEX, and size exclusion chromatography techniques.
• Operate liquid chromatography systems such as FPLC and/or HPLC for protein purification.
• Support high-throughput protein purification workflows involving multiple samples.
• Utilize automated liquid-handling or other laboratory automation platforms when applicable.
• Perform quality control assays to assess purified protein samples.
• Design, execute, analyze, and interpret experiments with appropriate scientific oversight.
• Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and prepare technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
• Follow established experimental procedures while delivering work accurately and efficiently.
• Support continuous improvement and automation of laboratory workflows.

Required Skills & Experience

• B.S. or M.S. in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Biophysics, or a related scientific discipline.
• Approximately 2–5 years of hands-on protein purification experience, with 2+ years strongly preferred.
• Experience with protein purification techniques including:
• Affinity chromatography
• Hands-on liquid chromatography experience using FPLC and/or HPLC for protein purification.
• Experience handling, separating, purifying, and assessing proteins in a laboratory environment.
• Comfortable spending the majority of the workday performing hands-on bench work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with laboratory automation or automated liquid-handling systems.
• Experience supporting high-throughput workflows, such as processing multi-sample or 96-well formats.
• Pharmaceutical or large-scale biopharmaceutical research experience.
• Experience performing protein quality control assays.
• Process development and/or analytical method development experience.
• Exposure to using AI tools such as Copilot or Claude to help develop, improve, or troubleshoot automated workflows or scripts is a plus. Coding experience is not required.

Compensation:

$35-45/hr

Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.
