Job summary

City of Minneapolis is offering a full-time Public Works Service Worker II apprenticeship within the Public Works Department. Apprentices will learn to operate a wide range of construction equipment and receive classroom training, eventually progressing to a vacant Public Works Service Worker II position after completing 6,000 hours and evaluating skills.

Applicants must commit to completing the 6,000 hours before moving into the PW Service Worker II role.

Qualifications

• Age: applicants must be at least 18 years old by application closing date.
• Minimum Experience: one year of experience performing Public Works Service Worker I duties or equivalent laboring experience.
• License: Valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restrictions.
• Driving Record: good driving record with no preventable accidents in past 3 years.
• Ramsay Multicraft Testing: required pre-employment test on Nov 17, 2026.
• Selection Process: exam/experience rating (80%) and seniority (20%).
• Interview Selection: may interview more candidates than exam score order.
• Background Check: criminal/background checks may be required.
• Union Representation: represented by IUOE-Local49; see hr/laboragreements/.
• Eligible List Statement: eligible list expires two months after establishment.

Responsibilities

• Learn to drive and operate heavy and light construction equipment ( excavators, bulldozers, cranes, loaders, etc.).
• Attend classroom training, complete workbook, learn safe operation procedures and OSHA regulations.
