Job summary

New York City Economic Development Corporation seeks a Superintendent to lead Operations and Maintenance for city-owned public markets, with a primary duty station at Essex Market. The role requires 24/7 on-call availability, weekend/holiday coverage, and supervision of maintenance staff and contractors.

You will coordinate repairs, ensure safety compliance, mentor staff, and maintain open communication with tenants and partners while supporting operational efficiency and asset protection.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent is required.
• 10+ years of experience in maintenance and upkeep of commercial properties.
• Working knowledge of construction and repair techniques including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, drywall.
• Knowledge of NYC Building Codes, Local Laws and life safety systems.
• Demonstrated supervisory skills including safety oversight and staff development.
• Effective communicator with tenants, contractors, and stakeholders; conflict resolution ability.
• Proficiency with work order input through handheld and desktop devices; knowledge of BMS.
• Knowledge of snow removal equipment and safe operation.
• Ability to lift 25–55 pounds; valid NYS Driver’s License; on-call 24/7.

Responsibilities

• Oversee maintenance staff and contracted personnel; schedule and evaluate performance.
• Coordinate repairs with management and contractors; ensure safety compliance.
• Provide training and mentorship to staff, including lead mechanic.
• Ensure routine property inspections and proper logging of work orders.
• Communicate status updates to stakeholders; report on repairs and projects.
• Respond to emergencies; coordinate snow removal and field coverage.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
