Job summary

LHH Recruitment Solutions is partnering with a well-established mechanical contractor in the Pacific Northwest to hire a Mechanical Estimator in Portland, OR. This role develops accurate estimates from conceptual budgets through final construction documents, collaborating with operations, vendors, and clients to win profitable work.

The role emphasizes problem solving, scope gap identification, and teamwork with field and operations teams to influence project success before construction begins.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in mechanical estimating, preconstruction, project management, or a related mechanical construction role.
• Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC, sheet metal, ductwork, piping, or mechanical systems (dry scope)
• Ability to analyze plans and specifications and build complete estimates

Responsibilities

• Review drawings, specifications, and project requirements
• Perform quantity takeoffs and pricing for HVAC systems, sheet metal and ductwork, piping, plumbing, mechanical equipment and specialty systems
• Develop conceptual budgets and preliminary estimates
• Evaluate subcontractor and supplier proposals
• Identify project risks, scope gaps, and value-engineering opportunities
• Participate in preconstruction meetings and client discussions
• Collaborate with operations, project managers, field teams, and leadership
• Support negotiated, design-build, and CM/GC project pursuits

About the Role

This is not a traditional "takeoff-only" estimating position.

We're looking for a mechanical construction and/or HVAC professional who understands how projects are actually built and can develop accurate, complete estimates from conceptual budgets through final construction documents. You'll work closely with operations, project management, vendors, subcontractors, and customers to identify opportunities, mitigate risk, and help win profitable work.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, identifying scope gaps, collaborating with field and operations teams, and contributing to the overall success of a project before construction begins.

What We're Looking For

• 3+ years of experience in mechanical estimating, preconstruction, project management, or a related mechanical construction role
• Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC, sheet metal, ductwork, piping, or mechanical systems (dry scope)
• Ability to analyze plans and specifications and build complete estimates
• Understanding of labor productivity, project sequencing, constructability, and project risk
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills
• Collaborative, team-first mindset
• Ability to work independently while engaging cross-functional teams

Highly Desired

• Experience estimating both wet-side and dry-side mechanical systems
• Conceptual estimating and budgeting experience
• Design-build, design-assist, or CM/GC experience
• Previous experience with a similar mechanical contractor
