Job summary

Mortenson Construction in Minnesota is seeking an experienced Project Engineer I to review and resolve field coordination issues, manage submittals, RFIs, and change orders, and help ensure project success.

This full-time, on-site role requires coordinating with project teams within a 90-mile radius of Minneapolis, maintaining safety, and mentoring field engineers while upholding quality standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Construction, Civil, or Architectural Engineering or Construction Management.
• Minimum two years of related construction experience.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices.
• Strong teamwork, initiative, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Proven positive and professional attitude and customer service skills.
• Current driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Interpret project plans and specifications for subcontractors and craft persons.
• Implement the pre-construction quality plan.
• Obtain and maintain construction permits; manage fee payments and recurring expenses.
• Develop and maintain material tracking lists, project test and inspection lists, and logs.
• Manage, create, and distribute contract documents.
• Establish handling procedures for electronic documents (RFIs, correspondence).
• Incorporate processes for project closeout; manage testing and inspection processes.
• Implement three-phase inspection system; establish reporting formats and schedules.
• Notify Project Manager and Superintendent of non-conforming test results or inspection items.
• Manage submittals: register, obtain approvals, prepare transmittals, coordinate packaging.
• Expedite submittals to align with project schedule; communicate process details to subcontractors.
• Issue submittal requirement letters and provide periodic updates of submittal registers.
• Coordinate subcontractor details: verify insurance, prepare paperwork, request final payment.
• Develop and distribute RFIs and Change Orders; post revisions to as-built docs.
• Incorporate subcontractor as-built documentation into contract updates.
• Mentor, manage, and evaluate field engineers; determine alternate work methods as needed.
• Coordinate safety and compliance for all team members; maintain schedule of timelines.
