Job DescriptionMake a lasting difference in students’ lives by serving as a coach, mentor, and advocate. In this role, you’ll empower high school students from diverse backgrounds through academic support, goal-setting, and college preparation, helping them realize their potential and navigate their path to success.

Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, this position supports the development and implementation of an interdisciplinary curriculum, including needs assessments and pre- and post-assessments, for high school students from underrepresented backgrounds. Deliver high-quality classroom instruction in assigned academic subjects, evaluate individual student needs, and provide targeted tutoring and academic support as necessary. Course content is designed to be dynamic, engaging, and student‑centered, emphasizing project-based learning, collaboration, and teamwork while incorporating multicultural perspectives. Mentors foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that encourages active participation, promotes student engagement, and demonstrates a strong commitment to helping students achieve academic success.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement engaging and interactive lesson plans in various subjects, including mathematics, science, English, foreign languages, and social studies.
  • Enforce and abide by Upward Bound rules and regulations.
  • Participate in staff training and scheduled staff meetings.
  • Provide individualized tutoring and academic support to students to enhance their understanding and performance in core subjects.
  • Monitor and assess student progress regularly, providing constructive feedback to students and their parents or guardians.
  • Collaborate with other instructors and staff members to coordinate educational activities, workshops, and field trips.
  • Mentor and guide students in setting academic goals and developing effective study skills.
  • Assist students in preparing for standardized tests, including ACT and SAT, by offering test-taking strategies and practice sessions.
  • Provide guidance and support to students in the college application process, including researching colleges, writing personal statements, and applying for scholarships and financial aid.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, academic performance, and program activities.
  • Understand and respect diverse beliefs and/or opinions with students and staff.
  • Maintain a safe working area and conditions at all times.
  • Dress professionally and appropriately as related to the discipline.
  • Complete all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skill Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Mathematics, Science, English, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum two (2) years teaching experience in the specific subject matter, preferred.
  • Previous experience in teaching or tutoring, preferably with high school students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and instructional strategies tailored to meet the needs of disadvantaged youth.
  • Familiarity with college admissions processes, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to establish rapport with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, attention to detail, and a passion for teaching.
  • Adaptability to meet the diverse needs of our students.
  • Willingness to extend oneself to help students succeed.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Proficiency in using educational technology and online learning platforms.
  • Current knowledge of programs, objectives, and requirements.
  • Commitment to promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach up, stoop.
  • Ability to lift an object of fifty (50) pounds or less, and carry items in excess of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to operate firefighting equipment, standard office machines such as copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.
  • Adherence to safety standards while employed by the college.

Classification: Staff – SupervisoryFLSA: ExemptEmployment Type: Temporary (Fixed Term)Compensation: Pay range starts at $23.23/hour. All salary calculations start at the minimum salary and will be based on candidate's education and experience. Open until filled.
