Department

Provost Globus Professional Services

About the Department

Globus (www.globus.org) is a sustainable, non-profit entity within The University of Chicago delivering solutions to the research community worldwide. Globus provides critical services that support scientific research for governmental, academic, and commercial organizations in a wide range of disciplines including life sciences, physics, and astronomy. We develop, operate, and sell commercial-quality SaaS and PaaS used by hundreds of thousands of researchers to address their large–and growing–data management challenges. Our office is located in the heart of downtown Chicago and we also offer flexible remote/work-from-home options.

Job Summary

As a Professional Services Engineer, you will help researchers achieve their research goals by integrating Globus SaaS/PaaS data and compute management services with their research applications. Organizations that adopt Globus include universities, national laboratories, federal research agencies and commercial companies of all shapes and sizes, and no single approach to data management works for all. Your knowledge of software development, high-performance computing, storage, and data architecture, combined with strong communication skills and analytical abilities, will help you demonstrate to customers how Globus services can improve and help sustain applications in diverse research disciplines.

We are curious problem solvers who love to understand the needs of current and prospective researchers, and work closely with them from initial awareness through deployment of Globus-enabled research applications. Our efforts are focused on helping customers extract maximum value from the Globus platform and have a meaningful impact on their research agenda. Using your relationship-building skills, you will provide exemplary customer service, anticipating how decisions are made, persistently exploring and uncovering the research IT needs of our customers, and understanding how Globus services can best support their mission. You will use your industry and product expertise to consult with customers, and identify how Globus will improve their research applications and ultimately support breakthrough discoveries.

Do you enjoy developing demonstrations, 'whiteboarding' solutions, and storytelling as a means to make products resonate with prospective customers? Are you always eager to hack some Python or Javascript that highlights how Globus might solve a customer’s problem? Are you equally at home presenting a high-level solution architecture and doing a code walkthrough with a customer’s software engineer? As a Globus solutions engineer you will have ample opportunity to showcase these and many other skills in a collaborative, mission-driven environment at the University of Chicago.

You will succeed in this role if you: treat it as your craft and are serious about constantly improving it; love technology, and are prepared to go as broad as possible and as deep as necessary to serve the customer; relish being challenged by customers; and possess and demonstrate conviction regarding the value of Globus to researchers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as a team member in research software projects to design and advise on the development of data portals, science gateways, data commons, and other research applications.

  • Consult with research software engineers with utilizing Globus APIs, SDK, and web interfaces to add Globus data management features to their applications.

  • Develop, test, document and deploy work with other research software engineers to optimize and troubleshoot Globus features in their applications.

  • Understand, articulate and evangelize the Globus approach to transforming the way researchers manage their data utilizing technical knowledge of existing and emerging technologies.

  • Grow the body of available Globus knowledge by documenting best practices, developing code samples, and sharing learnings with both Globus staff and customers.

  • Provide expert knowledge on research applications and support the Globus product team in documenting use cases and user scenarios, quantifying user requirements, and preparing partners for Globus product changes and enhancements.

  • Act as a technical consultant to the Globus customer team in growing adoption of the Globus service and data management solutions within our diverse user base.

  • Assess data management risks and implications due to compliance with privacy and other security regulations.

  • Utilizes technical knowledge of existing and emerging technologies, including public cloud offerings from Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

  • Designs new systems, features, and tools. Solves complex problems and identifies opportunities for technical improvement and performance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensure appropriate standards are met.
