Job summary

The University of New Mexico's Office of Advising Strategies is seeking a Professional Advising Intern to gain on-the-job training in Academic Advising and Student Success. This fixed-term, full-time on-site role supports campus centers and helps interns develop a broad skill set.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree within 24 months of hire (or current enrollment). Strong oral and written communication and analytical skills are required.

Qualifications

  • Must have obtained a Bachelor's or higher level degree no more than 24 months prior to the date of hire OR if the Bachelor's (or higher level) degree was obtained more than 24 months prior to the date of hire, the individual must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's (or higher level) degree program; no previous work experience required.

  • Trainto become generalists in both academic and integrated advising. Whiletraining, they will provide feedback and support to improve the trainingexperience for all advising and success personnel.
  • Perform, on an as-needed basis, the duties of academic advisors or studentsuccess specialists for units across campus.
  • Support the needs of the advisement community during specific/peak times of thesemester and targeted events.
  • Provide direct support to OAS and center staff for projects and initiativesfocused on community engagement, transparent and continuouscommunication.

The Office of Advising Strategies (OAS) is looking forprofessional interns to engage in an experience designed to provideon-the-job training and professional development for recent alumni interestedin working in Academic Advising and Student Success at UNM. This positionserves as a bridge for recent college graduates to careers in fields such aseducation, higher education administration, coaching and mentoring, humanresources, counseling, customer service, and public service.

Continuing to build on our current cohort, thisprofessional will join a team committed to the systematic support of advisingand student success at UNM while gaining new experience to build theirportfolio as a professional. They will be trained by the UNM AdvisementTrainer and may be deployed to various academic or integrated advisementcenters on an as-needed basis. There, they will receive additional trainingwhile supporting the core responsibilities of those centers.

Chosen candidates will also support OAS internalinitiatives designed to strengthen support for student success and theadvisement community. Responsibilities may vary significantly based onorganizational needs and, beyond traditional advising, may range from frontdesk coverage and student-facing customer service to proactive outreachefforts, including cold-calling students, appointment campaigns, datamanagement, and other advising support functions.

This role provides the opportunity to develop a broad anddiverse skill set through exposure to a wide range of projects,responsibilities, and operational functions, while helping ensure officesremain relevant, responsive, and integral to supporting student success andthe work of those who support it.

This is a fixed-term position, with a term end date 2years from date of hire. This position will have a full-time schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Successfulcandidates should possess a strongdesireto support college students in achieving their educational goals.They will need well-developed oral and written communication skills, as wellas strong analytical skills. Experience collaborating and interacting withdiverse constituents and the ability to adapt to a fluid placement based oncenter needs are critical to be successful in this position.

The individuals selected for this position will:

Conditions of Employment
  • Must present transcripts prior to a formal offer being extended.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.
