Job summary

Elastic, the Search AI Company, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the Elasticsearch - Distributed Systems team. You will tackle deep distributed systems challenges in node communication, indexing, and data movement within a Serverless context spanning large-scale deployments.

You will design, build, and operate core components, improve concurrent indexing, maintain cluster coordination, and push shard/node scalability while collaborating with engineers across disciplines to deliver

Qualifications

• Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
• Strong skills in core Java and data structures/concurrency constructs.
• Deep proficiency in algorithms and complex problem solving.
• Experience building large-scale distributed systems, not using off-the-shelf services.
• Experience building and debugging complex features with broad impact across multiple machines.
• Ability to own projects from design to delivery and collaborate with others.
• Experience managing projects involving multiple engineers.
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development and optimize code while owning outcomes.
• Ability to collaborate across functions and teams and transition between projects/teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate core pieces of our next-generation Serverless Elasticsearch offering, impacting customers worldwide.
• Improve Elasticsearch components that support concurrent indexing across multiple machines.
• Maintain cluster coordination to handle node churn while preserving safety and liveness.
• Push limits on shards, nodes, and petabytes that Elasticsearch can handle today.
• Investigate performance or concurrency issues and propose solutions.
• Support our engineers with harder problems.
• Own end-to-end operational investigations until performance or stability issues are resolved.
