Elastic is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the Elasticsearch - Distributed Systems team. You will tackle deep distributed systems challenges, focusing on scale, performance, and resilience in the Serverless offering across nodes and data coordination.

You will design and implement core components, improve indexing consistency, and maintain cluster coordination while supporting a global customer base. Experience with AI-accelerated development is valued.

Qualifications

• Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
• Strong skills in core Java and standard data structures and concurrency constructs.
• Deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
• Experience building large-scale distributed systems with multi-machine deployments.
• Ability to own projects from design to delivery and collaborate across teams.
• Experience managing projects involving multiple engineers.
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development and optimize code.
• Ability to transition between projects, codebases, or teams based on priorities.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate core pieces of our Serverless Elasticsearch offering.
• Improve components supporting concurrent, consistent indexing across machines.
• Maintain cluster coordination to sustain performance with churn and data movement.
• Push limits on shards, nodes, and petabytes handled today.
• Investigate performance or concurrency issues and propose solutions.
• Support engineers with hard problems and drive end-to-end investigations.
