Job summary

Avalara, Inc. is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the ELR ecosystem, shaping scalable, secure, and highly available live reporting and e-invoicing platforms. You will own architecture, developer tooling, and onboarding experiences for customers and ERP integrations across global jurisdictions.

You will design high-throughput ingestion, data transformation, and DX tooling while mentoring teams and advancing API-first, cloud-native solutions that meet strict regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with large-scale distributed cloud systems.
• Proven track record delivering developer tools, integration platforms, or enterprise integration middleware.
• Strong proficiency in modern backend languages and runtimes (Java, C#/.NET Core, Go, Python).
• Deep mastery of API design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC) and event-driven architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Experience with XML/XSD, JSON Schema, UBL, and EDI payload transformations.

Responsibilities

• Architect and evolve the ELR platform to support millions of real-time transactions globally.
• Design low-latency ingestion, format transformation, and digital signing services.
• Build self-service onboarding, integration tooling, and developer experiences for ERP integrations.
• Mentor engineers, drive architectural standards, and improve observability and testing.
