Job summary

Avalara is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the ELR platform architecture and developer tooling. You will shape high‑throughput, multi‑region cloud services, build self‑service onboarding, and embed AI capabilities to automate schema mapping and testing for real‑time invoicing and reporting.

This hands‑on role requires deep system design and mentoring across global teams. You will collaborate with engineers across the U.S., Europe, India, and Brazil to deliver scalable, auditable solutions

Qualifications

• 15+ years of hands‑on software engineering experience with large‑scale distributed cloud systems.
• Proven track record delivering developer tools, integration platforms, or self‑service onboarding engines.
• Strong proficiency in backend languages (Java, C#/.NET Core, Go, Python).
• Deep mastery of API design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC), event‑driven architectures (Kafka, EventBridge, RabbitMQ).
• Experience with AWS and modern DevOps (Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes/ECS, CI/CD).
• Ability to navigate complex domain logic and regulatory requirements with clarity.

Responsibilities

• Architect distributed ELR cloud services supporting millions of real‑time transactions across global jurisdictions.
• Design ultra‑low‑latency ingestion pipelines and format transformation engines (XML, JSON, UBL, EDI).
• Architect systems with high availability, data residency, and auditability in multi‑region deployments.
• Pioneer onboarding frameworks, data mapping, format translation, and schema validation engines for ERP connectors.
• Build AI‑powered tooling into ELR workflows and mentor engineers across teams.
