Job summary

Appalachian Power Co. is seeking a capable Power Plant Operator to perform semi-skilled maintenance and operating duties across Operations, Maintenance or Coal Yard.

You will isolate, inspect, and service strainers, heat exchangers and dust collectors, while operating tools and maintaining equipment in a safe, clean environment. Responsibilities include boiler prep, coal feed monitoring, lubrication, minor repairs, and documentation of tests and conditions.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in engineering, industrial or energy technology, or two years of related work experience with another associate degree.
• High school diploma with four years of related work experience, or two years of related military experience.
• Possess a valid State driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Isolate, clean, inspect, replace and return to service strainers, heat exchangers and dust collectors.
• Operate, service and lubricate portable power tools and equipment; maintain work areas and test with portable meters.
• Maintain bottom ash and flyash handling equipment; monitor plant equipment and report abnormal conditions.
• Disassemble and reassemble parts; prepare surfaces for service and recover housings; install simple scaffolding and rigging.
• Move materials and operate material handling equipment; load and unload supplies and equipment.
• Perform routine cleaning of plant areas and equipment, including outside areas and nozzles.
• Assist in preparing boilers for operation and monitor coal feed to mills and burners; manage soot blowers and ash lines.
• Read flow diagrams, identify piping and equipment, and document related tests and reports.
• Adhere to safety rules and participate in firefighting and emergency response training.
