Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Post-Surgical Unit. You will support the RN with basic nursing tasks, patient comfort, hygiene, and daily living activities.

The role requires a High School Diploma or GED, BLS/CPR, and preferred CENA certification or enrollment in a health science program with clinical experience. Weekend shifts are required, and the position is part-time (0.3 FTE).

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification, or enrollment in health science program with nursing fundamentals course and/or one clinical rotation preferred; equivalently related programs may be accepted.
• Basic understanding of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Patient Confidentiality preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider required.
• Experience in acute care or extended care facility preferred.
• Must be able to complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in orientation.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with daily living activities and provide comfort; make beds; turn, position, ambulate, transfer, and assist with range-of-motion exercises.
• Assist with hygiene activities.
• Provide urinary catheter care (excluding insertion/removal) and change non-sterile dressings; provide ileostomy/colostomy care.
• Assist with postmortem care.
• Assist patients with nutrition: passing trays, feeding, and recording intake.
• Assist with elimination needs and manage drains per RN instructions.
• Collect sputum, urine, and stool samples; test urine; use glucometer for blood glucose.
• Measure and record vital signs and weight; use scales as needed.
• Operate and set up equipment (oxygen, suction, ice packs, heat therapy, etc.).
• Infection control: use aseptic technique and standard precautions; handle linen andDispose of waste; clean equipment.
• Document care as directed by RN.
• Communicate effectively using unit systems; respond to call lights; report observations to RN; maintain confidentiality.
• Performs other duties as assigned by RN to support department efficiency and ongoing learning.
