Job summary

New Hanover County is seeking an experienced Plans Examiner Specialist to review construction plans for code compliance and to verify licenses for engineers, architects, and contractors. The role includes field inspections, maintaining records, and serving as a subject-matter expert for staff and customers.

Candidate must be pre-qualified by the NC Office of State Fire Marshal or hold NC certificates in Building, Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of North Carolina codes, building and related trades.
• Excellent written and oral communication; strong computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Review submitted construction plans for code compliance.
• Review contractor licenses and verify licensing requirements for engineers, architects and contractors.
• Inspect new and existing residential and commercial structures as needed for compliance with standards, laws and ordinances.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections and plan reviews performed; verify state licensing requirements.
• Serve as SME for customers and field staff; mentor plan reviewers.

Education

NC Office of State Fire Marshal pre-qualification or NC building/electrical/mechanical/plumbing certificates
