Job summary

New Hanover County in North Carolina is seeking a customer-focused Permitting Specialist to assist developers, homeowners, and contractors through the building and trade permitting process. You will review applications, answer questions, schedule inspections, and use the county’s permitting software to issue permits and manage records.

The ideal candidate is computer-savvy, a strong communicator, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED with two years of experience related to customer service and construction permitting/inspections, or equivalent
Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to learn new software quickly
Excellent computer skills and ability to work in a fast-paced customer-friendly office environment

Responsibilities

Receive, review, and process building and trade permit applications for completeness
Assist customers in person, by phone, and by email throughout the permitting process
Set up projects, maintain records, schedule inspections, and issue permits using county permitting software
Process permit fees and payments and provide customers with information on status
Connect customers with appropriate technical staff and subject matter experts and perform other related duties
