Job summary

New Hanover County is seeking a customer-focused Permitting Specialist in the Building Safety Permitting department. You will help developers, contractors, homeowners navigate the permitting process and act as a primary contact for applicants.

You will review applications for completeness, set up projects, schedule inspections, and use county permitting software. Strong communication and computer skills are essential in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED and two years of customer service and permitting/inspections experience, or equivalent
• Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel and able to learn new software quickly
• Strong computer skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, customer-friendly office environment

Responsibilities

• Receive, review, and process building and trade permit applications for completeness.
• Assist customers in person, by phone, and by email throughout the permitting process.
• Set up projects, maintain records, schedule inspections, and issue permits using permitting software.
• Process permit fees and payments; provide status information to customers.
• Connect customers with technical staff and subject matter experts; perform related duties.
