Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Lab Support Tech I to greet patients, perform phlebotomy, and support specimen collection and processing in a busy hospital lab.

This 24-hour role requires flexibility, with a 6am-2:30pm shift, weekend rotations every third weekend, and a non-exempt status. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma, a valid driver’s license, and strong computer and English communication skills.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license.
• Phlebotomy training preferred.
• ASCP certification or eligibility preferred.
• Fluent English communication skills preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collects blood samples using venipuncture techniques across all age groups.
• Follows departmental protocols for sample collection.
• Communicates difficulties or complications to supervisors and maintains professional conduct.
• Registers all courier-delivered specimens accurately and efficiently.
• Receives specimens in the computer system and labels/prioritizes them (e.g., STAT, STROKE, CSF).
• Transports specimens promptly and redistributes them per protocol.
• Restocks supplies and keeps a clean/organized drawing station or cart.
• Orders tests accurately using hospital information systems and test dictionaries.
• Answers and transfers calls courteously and ensures coverage at all times.
• Performs heel sticks and PKU collections with proper sample volume and quality.
• Adapts to workflow changes and provides coverage for home draws/secretarial duties.
• Maintains PPE and reports shift details; participates in annual competency reviews.
